You’re in the store looking for the perfect shampoo, and you see sulfate-free. It somehow is more expensive, and you think it’s better to use, but do you know why? We often use things blindly because we hear something is beneficial for us. Sulfate is sodium that forms when sulfuric acid reacts with another chemical. The word’s used as a broader term for other synthetic sulfate-based substances that may cause harm over time due to excessive exposure. The compound is found in water in various amounts. Sulfates may also be found in minerals, soil, rocks,  and plants. It’s not completely bad; we use these chemicals in everyday products. Because sulfates attract both oil and water, a lot of products use this substance for cleansing products. Soaps, shampoo, and many other hygiene products contain the foamy compound. When products tend to lather and foam, it is usually from the sulfate in the product. Shampoo that contains the lathery substance tends to strip oil and dirt away from the hair. However, it leaves the hair stripped of its natural moisture and oils. It may also leave the scalp dry, suitable for individuals who suffer from oily hair or dry scalp.

Why Sulfate-free?

People with dry, frizzy, or dyed hair should consider a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfate-free cleansers maintain the natural oils, which leave hair with more moisture.

Sulfate-free shampoos don’t create the same lather as sulfate-based formulas, so in order to evenly distribute your shampoo, a lot of water is needed.
