On June 16, Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of second degree murder charges in the shooting death of Philando Castile. Castile was killed July 6, 2016 during a routine traffic stop in St. Anthony, MN that ended in his death. His girlfriend at the time of his murder captured the events via Facebook Live.  In addition to his girlfriend Diamond, her four-year old daughter was also present and witnessed the events.

Although justice was not served, the family and the city has reached a settlement in the amount of $2.995 million. In a statement released by the city, they acknowledge that the funds would totally come from the city and tax payers money would not be used.

A dash cam video released late last week reminded the family of the torture Philando endured by those that are supposed to protect and serve.  This is the second large settlement awarded to families of a police shooting victim. Earlier this month the family of Michael Brown settled its lawsuit against Ferguson, MO for $1.5 million.

The family expressed that there is no amount of money that could replace Philando. The  Philando Castile Relief Foundation has been set up, and the family hopes to keep his name and memory alive through it.
