In the Hip Hop Industry, we’ve seen an influx of Female Rappers flood the Market in hopes of becoming the next Nicki Minaj or Cardi B. Recently the Internet heckled a Young Lady from Mobile, Alabama named Shamartess Whitsett. Shamartess happened to connect with Hip-Hop Superstar Future after networking with him at a recording studio. Through technology, she was able to stay in contact with Future, and she decided to fly out to Los Angeles to meet up with the Artist in hopes of landing a verse from him.

Please note: This is not another one of those messy “drag sessions” of Shamartess. As Women, we should educate other Women on how to maneuver in the business arena. Having that been said we at Pretty Hustlaz have decided to provide a general guide for Female Artists on the proper way to request a featured verse.

Step 1 Save up your coins. Verses range from $1,000 up to $100,000 . Even on the low end of the spectrum, this can be a significant investment for an upcoming Female Artist.

Step 2 Develop relationships to network your way into the Artist’s social circle, ask the Artist if they are open to the feature. The Artist will provide you with their Management Team’s contact. Keep in mind that signed Artists have to request clearance from their label before releasing music or doing collaborations. DO NOT forget to discuss the clearance aspect of the process.

Step 3 Reach out to said Artist’s Management Team to determine the verse rate. The Manager will then send you the appropriate contract.

Step 4 Contact your Entertainment Lawyer and have them review the contract. Send the Contract back along with the requested funds.

Step 5  After you’ve paid for the verse. Record the song and have the Artist record their verse.

Step 6 This next step is crucial if the Artist is signed to ANY Label, most are. Send the finished song to Artist’s Label and request clearance of the record. Without clearance, you cannot legally use the song nor make money from it.

Now, that you’re aware of the process on how to properly request a feature from an Artist, you will eliminate a lot of headaches for yourself as a Female Artist navigating the Music Industry.

Pretty Hustlaz, comment and let us know  Do you think Shamartess was confused about Industry Etiquette? Was she really going to L.A. to get in the studio? What collaborations are you looking forward to hearing?
