October is best known for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It also dubs Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is defined as violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. 20 people per minute are abused by a partner in the United States, equating to more than 10 million people per year. To bring October to an end The Pretty Hustle Team had the honor of attending Succeeding Against  All Odds the stage play. If the title sounds familiar, it’s because we also covered the author turned producer Shawntrell Hudson-Venisee, at the South Florida Book Festival. At that time, Shawntrell was hosting a book signing for her book. Shortly after, the book was adapted into a play and because of the subject matter, what better way to bring domestic violence awareness month to a close than to bring the book to the stage for the very first time.

On Saturday October 27th 2018 we got to see the words of Shawntrell’s book acted out on stage by a group of amazing actors and actresses. The play opened with Skylar and Demarcus, sitting back to back discussing where their marriage went wrong . We then were taken back to the beginning of their love story. Now I don’t want to give too much away since reading the book is encouraged, but I will say that I found myself captured by the characters. The story was not only a cautionary tale regarding domestic violence, but also one of triumph. Some key players in the production were Author/ Producer Shawntrell Hudson,  The Director Anthony Jerome Larkin and the set designer  Jervin “Jay” Thompson.  Succeeding  Against All Odds will be on the road soon so hopefully this provides additional opportunities to catch this amazing play. You may also purchase a copy of the book on her website http://www.shawntrellhudson.com.
