The Olympics started on Monday but in just days, we’ve witnessed the epitome of Black Girl Magic. If anybody ever questioned what was so magical about us; they should take a look at this year’s Olympic games. I love this time of year because we can sit in front of the TV and see women that look like you and me on the TV doing something positive. So many times we’re portrayed negatively in the Media and disregarded by society. But this Olympic year, black girls are proving that we have the juice. This isn’t anything new but with the help of social media the entire world now knows that we have arrived. A friend of mine said “They’re in formation” I giggled because she and I are both members of the Bey-hive but in reality, these women are in formation. They are showing up, showing out and taking names. We are participating in sports that people don’t even consider us for and we’re making history.
It’s almost like they went to Rio with an agenda and I would say agenda fulfilled. But we still have a lot of the Olympics left. We’re represented in basketball, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, track & field, tennis, and other sports as well. It makes me really proud to be a black woman in America because we live in a country that thinks less of us, a country that has created these fake stereotypes about us, a country that will look down on us for our culture but turn around and praise another ethnicity for appropriating our culture. As Bey would say…. And we SLAY and that’s exactly what we’ve come to do. Because of ladies like; Simone Biles, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Simone Manuel, Serena Williams, Gabby Douglas, Michelle Carter, Alyson Felix, Ashleigh Johnson, Natasha Hastings, Brionna Rollins, Tamika Catchings, Brittney Griner, and Shelly Ann Fraser- Pryce, young black girls can look to them and actually become them. These women along with every other black woman representing their countries are the epitome of great. They represent strength, courage, determination, hard-work, resilience, and magic…yes black girl magic and I am so proud to be a black girl!
